Logistics business coach working through a business plan with a trucking company owner

Logistics business coaching

Consulting solves a problem. Coaching helps you think through the next decision before you make it. It is a regular conversation with LFS about your trucking or freight business: what the numbers say, what is coming due, and what to decide next.

Why owners want a coach

Running a small trucking company or brokerage is lonely work. You make the decisions, carry the risk and answer the phone at midnight. Most owners do not lack effort. What they lack is someone with experience who looks at the business with them every week or two and asks the plain questions.

Our founder, Michael Thomas, has spent more than 25 years in freight, brokering loads, building trucking companies and keeping small carriers running through bad markets. Coaching is that experience, applied to your business on a schedule, so problems get caught while they are still small.

We are a carrier-first company. Part of our mission is that no small trucking company has to run alone.

Coaching also keeps you honest with yourself. When you know someone will ask about your days-to-payment and your cost per mile next week, you track them this week.

Who coaching is for

Trucking company owners

Owner-operators and small fleets who want steady guidance on rates, cash and compliance.

New brokerage owners

Brokerage owners in their first years, including brokerages LFS has built, who want a second set of eyes on pricing, carrier vetting and cash.

Freight agents building a book

Agents, including those placed with brokerages in the LFS network, who want help working through shipper relationships and the discipline of the work.

What a coaching conversation looks at

Each conversation follows the same circle we teach: research, the right load, dispatch, operations, billing, collection, cash and compliance. A weak spot at one station shows up at the next, so we look at all of them, briefly, every time.

  • Loads run and rates taken, against your cost per mile
  • Invoices out and how long each one is taking to pay
  • Cash on hand against what is coming due
  • Compliance dates in the next 90 days
  • Brokers and customers: who is working, who is not
  • The one decision that matters most before the next call

How coaching works

  1. Tell us about your business

Use the form below so we know where you are before the first call.

  2. Set the baseline

The first session looks at your numbers, your paperwork and your goals, and agrees what to track.

  3. Regular check-ins

Scheduled conversations on the items above, with notes on what you decided.

  4. Adjust as you go

As the business changes, the focus changes with it: a second truck, a new customer, an audit or a slow market.

Coaching backed by education

Our coaching comes from 25+ years in freight, with the education, research and academics of Freight University behind it. You don't just get a coach. You get a complete platform backed by education and transparency. How we work.

  • 25+ years in freight
  • Freight University behind every answer
  • Transparency on everything

What coaching is not

Coaching is not a promise of income or results. You run your business and make your decisions; we tell you what we see and why. It is not legal or tax advice, and we will tell you when you need an attorney or accountant. If you want to start with our thinking for free, read The Art of the Deal with 10 Wheels in the Freight University Library.

Questions and answers

How is coaching different from consulting?

Consulting takes on a specific problem or project, such as a startup plan or a cash-flow fix. Coaching is ongoing, on a regular schedule, and covers the whole business.

How much does coaching cost?

Tell us about your business on the form. We will explain the format and cost before anything begins.

Is coaching the same as Freight University training?

No. Freight University teaches the skills of freight brokering, agent work and dispatching. Coaching helps people who are already running a business.
