FMCSA Motus registration help

Motus is FMCSA's new USDOT registration system. If your FMCSA Motus registration is stuck, we walk through it with you step by step. You complete the identity verification yourself; we help with everything around it.

What FMCSA Motus registration is

Motus is FMCSA's USDOT Registration System. It replaced FMCSA's legacy registration systems, so new registrations now run through it (FMCSA registration).

The biggest change for new registrants is identity verification. You must pass it before your registration moves forward. That step is tied to you as a person, which is why nobody else can do it for you.

For a new carrier, a stuck registration is not a small thing. Until it goes through you have no USDOT number to put on the truck, and operating authority is not granted until your BOC-3 and insurance filing are on file. Every week it sits is a week the truck does not earn.

Where Motus registrations usually get stuck

We don't guess at error messages. These are the general problem areas owners bring to us.

Identity verification not completing

The identity document capture or check doesn't finish, or the owner isn't sure what the system is asking for. We go through FMCSA's instructions with you before you try again.

Account access for an existing USDOT number

Carriers who already have a USDOT number need access to that record in the new system. We help you work out what FMCSA needs and who at FMCSA can resolve it.

Company information that doesn't match

Legal name, address or ownership details that differ from what is already on record can hold things up. We compare what you're entering against your current records.

Applications sitting pending

An application that shows as pending with no clear next step. We help you confirm what's outstanding and prepare for the call to FMCSA if that's what it takes.

Who we help with Motus

  • New trucking companies registering for a USDOT number and authority for the first time. We pair Motus help with our operating authority guidance.
  • Existing carriers who need access to their current USDOT record, or who need to file an update such as the MCS-150.
  • Intrastate carriers in states that require a USDOT number, covered on our intrastate authority page.
  • New freight brokerages we build for clients under the client's own authority. See freight brokerage setup.

Whichever group you are in, identity verification works the same way: the owner does it, and we help you get ready for it. We work with owners in all 48 contiguous states, remotely.

What to have ready before you start

Having these in front of you saves a lot of back and forth. Check FMCSA's Motus resources for the current specifics.

  • The identity document you'll use for identity verification, and the device you'll use to capture it
  • Your USDOT number, and MC number if you have one, if you're an existing carrier
  • Your company's legal name, address and ownership details exactly as they appear on your current records
  • An email address and phone number you control and check, because the account is yours
  • Your process agent (BOC-3) and insurance details if you're applying for operating authority
  • Time to finish in one sitting, without the truck running

How LFS helps with Motus registration

  1. Find where you're stuck

A short call about what you were trying to do, what happened, and what your current registration shows.

  2. Line up your information

We review your company details with you so what you enter matches what FMCSA already has.

  3. Walk through it together

We go screen by screen with you by phone or screen share. You stay in control of your account.

  4. You verify your identity

The owner completes identity verification personally. We explain the steps and help with everything around them.

  5. Escalate when it's FMCSA's to fix

Some problems only FMCSA can resolve. We help you prepare for the call so you have the right numbers and details in front of you.

  6. Line up what comes next

Once you're through, we help with the BOC-3, UCR and MCS-150 filings and the operating authority steps.

Backed by education

Our help with Motus registration is backed by the education we created at Freight University. We use education, data, technology and academics to stay on top of the newest FMCSA rules and regulations. You don't get one person. You get a team, a platform and a network with up-to-date information, making sure it's done the right and correct way. How we work.

  • Current on the newest FMCSA rules
  • A team, a platform and a network behind you
  • Done the right and correct way

Calling FMCSA directly

FMCSA's Contact Center is 1-800-832-5660, and FMCSA posts its Motus resources on its registration page. FMCSA also temporarily paused some biennial update enforcement during the transition; check that page for the current status. We are not FMCSA and can't change your record, but we can make sure you know what to ask.

Questions and answers

What is FMCSA Motus?

Motus is FMCSA's USDOT Registration System, which replaced the legacy registration systems. New registrants must pass identity verification in it (FMCSA).

Can LFS complete identity verification for me?

No. Identity verification is tied to the owner, so you complete it personally. We walk through the process with you and help with everything around it.

What is FMCSA's phone number for Motus help?

The FMCSA Contact Center is 1-800-832-5660. FMCSA's Motus resources are on its registration page.

I already have a USDOT number. Can you help me get into my account?

Yes, account access for an existing USDOT number is one of the most common problem areas. We help you work out what FMCSA needs, and when only FMCSA can fix it, we help you prepare for that call.

Do I still need to file my MCS-150 biennial update?

Yes. The MCS-150 is updated every 24 months on a schedule set by your USDOT number, and whenever your company information changes (49 CFR 390.19). FMCSA temporarily paused some enforcement during the Motus transition, so check its registration page for the current status.

Is LFS part of FMCSA?

No. LFS is a private compliance service company. We help carriers in all 48 contiguous states work through FMCSA's systems; FMCSA makes every registration decision.
