Trucking Company Management in Utah
For Utah owners who want a real trucking business, not a guess. We manage the truck, the paperwork and the freight.
We are a carrier-first company.
Why New Trucking Companies Struggle
These are real numbers from public sources. They are why we built a managed model instead of leaving new owners on their own.

You Own It. We Manage It.
Plenty of people in Utah want to own a truck as an investment or as passive income from trucking. Here is the honest version: you own the truck and the business, and the results depend on freight, the driver, the truck and the market. Nobody can promise a number. In January 2026 the FTC shut down a trucking business opportunity that sold people on easy trucking income.
What we can do is run the work that sinks most new companies. We manage dispatch, compliance, back office and freight planning, and we keep you in the loop on every truck. Read our risks and disclosures before you buy anything.
- You own the truck and the authority
- We handle dispatch and compliance
- Plain updates on every load
- No promised income, ever
Two Roads for a New Trucking Company
Most new carriers in Utah pick one of these two roads, whether they know it or not.
Going It Alone
- Freight: Load boards every day and taking whatever pays the bills
- Compliance: Learning the audit rules after a violation shows up
- Fraud: Hoping the broker on the phone is real
- Training: YouTube videos and guesswork
- Your time: Phone, paperwork and problems all day
Managed With LFS
- Freight: A lane plan built for your truck, working toward repeat freight
- Compliance: Files, drivers and filings checked before the audit
- Fraud: Brokers and loads checked with LFS Shield
- Training: Real instruction from Freight University
- Your time: You make the owner calls, we run the work

Utah Trucking Rules to Know
These are the main rules for a trucking company based in Utah. Rules change, so we check the official source before you file anything.
IRP Plates and IFTA Through Utah
If Utah is your base state, you apply for IRP apportioned plates and an IFTA fuel tax license through Utah. IFTA returns are due every quarter (April 30, July 31, October 31 and January 31).
Hauling Only Inside Utah
If you only haul inside Utah, intrastate rules from Utah apply, and they can differ from the federal ones. We check the current Utah rules with the state agency before your first load.
USDOT, MC Authority and BOC-3
Interstate for-hire carriers need a USDOT number, operating authority (MC number), a BOC-3 process agent filing and insurance filed with FMCSA. General freight carriers need at least $750,000 in liability coverage.
Official source: FMCSA registration
UCR and Heavy Vehicle Use Tax
Interstate carriers register for the Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) every year. Trucks at 55,000 lbs or more file IRS Form 2290 for the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax.
Official source: IRS Form 2290
Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse
Every CDL driver you hire must be checked in the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse before they drive, and checked again each year.
Official source: FMCSA Clearinghouse
New Entrant Safety Audit
FMCSA audits new carriers within their first 12 months. The rule lists 16 violations that fail the audit on their own, like no drug and alcohol testing program or using a driver without a valid CDL.
Official source: Federal Register
How to Start a Trucking Company in Utah
You can start a trucking company in Utah without driving the truck yourself. You still own the business, so you need to know these steps. See the full guide to starting a trucking company.
Pick Your Freight and Truck
Decide on equipment and lanes first. Utah moves a lot of retail, e-commerce and food products.
Get Your USDOT and MC Number
Apply with FMCSA, file a BOC-3 and have your insurance company file proof of coverage.
Set Up IRP, IFTA and UCR
Get apportioned plates and an IFTA license through Utah, and register for UCR.
Hire and Check a Driver
If you won't drive, hire a CDL driver, run the Clearinghouse check and set up the driver file and drug testing.
Line Up Dispatch and Freight
New authority can be hard to get loads with at first. A dispatcher who knows new-authority brokers helps you get started.
Pass the New Entrant Audit
FMCSA will audit you in the first 12 months. Keep your files clean from day one.

Consistent Freight on Utah Lanes
Utah trucks run I-15, I-80 and I-70, with freight hubs in Salt Lake City, Ogden, Provo and St. George and traffic through the Salt Lake City distribution hub. Common freight includes retail, e-commerce and food products.
Consistent freight doesn't happen by luck. We start new authority with brokers that work with new carriers, then build toward repeat lanes and steady customers as your safety record grows. We don't promise a set number of loads, but we do build a plan and stick to it. Shippers can also ship freight in Utah with us.
- Lane plans by season
- Brokers checked before booking
- Repeat lanes as you grow
- Trailer-fit freight only
Trucking Automation With LFS AOS and MT
Trucking automation should save time, not hide problems. LFS AOS with MT is the operating system our team uses to run managed carriers: load status, compliance items, documents and alerts in one place. It is in access-request beta for managed clients. See all of our trucking software.
CargoNet counted about $725 million in cargo theft in 2025, up about 60%, and the FBI warns about fake broker and carrier schemes. Checking every broker and load is part of how we run your truck.
- Load and document tracking
- Compliance reminders
- Fraud alerts from LFS Shield
- Access-request beta for clients
How to Check Any Trucking Management Company
Before you sign with anyone in Utah, including us, check these things. You can also look up complaints at Freight Broker Complaint.
- They don't promise a set income or return on your truck.
- They explain who owns the truck, the authority and the insurance.
- They show you how they check brokers for fraud.
- They put fees and terms in writing before you pay.
- They tell you the risks, not just the upside.
- They train you on the business instead of keeping you in the dark.

Utah Trucking Management Questions
What is trucking management in Utah?
Trucking management means a company runs the day-to-day work of your trucking business for you: dispatch, compliance, back office and freight planning. You still own the truck and the business in Utah. See trucking company management.
Can I start a trucking company in Utah without driving?
Yes. Many owners hire a CDL driver and use a management company. You still own the authority, so you're responsible for safety, insurance and compliance, even if someone else drives and dispatches.
Is trucking a good passive income investment in Utah?
It can be a real business, but it isn't truly passive and nobody can promise income. Results depend on freight, the driver, the truck and the market. In 2026 the FTC shut down a company that sold easy trucking income. Read our risks and disclosures.
What do I need to run a trucking company based in Utah?
For interstate freight: a USDOT number, MC authority, BOC-3, insurance on file, UCR, and IRP plates plus an IFTA license through Utah. If you only haul inside Utah, check the state's intrastate rules too.
Can you dispatch for a new authority?
Yes. Many brokers won't work with new MC numbers at first, so we start with brokers that do and build toward better and repeat freight as your record grows.
Can you get my truck consistent freight in Utah?
We build a lane plan around I-15, I-80 and I-70 and work toward repeat lanes. Freight changes with the season and the market, so we won't promise a set number of loads.
What fails a new entrant safety audit?
FMCSA lists 16 violations that fail the audit on their own, such as having no drug and alcohol testing program, using a driver without a valid CDL, or running without required insurance. Source.
How do you keep my truck safe from freight fraud?
We check brokers and loads with LFS Shield for authority, insurance and fraud signs before booking. FMCSA has guidance on broker and carrier fraud.
What is LFS AOS with MT?
It's the operating system our team uses to run managed carriers. It's in access-request beta for managed clients only, and you can ask your manager for access.
Do I need training to own a trucking company?
We strongly recommend it. People don't go to school to fail, they go to school to succeed. Our managed carriers learn the business through Freight University.
